USS Atik AK-101

1/700 USS Atik AK-101 (Scratchbuild)

Here is my scratchbuild of USS Atik AK 101. She and her sister (Asterion, AK 100) were Q-ships, or merchant vessels converted to carry concealed weapons. Atik carried 4- 4"50 Cal guns hidden behind the bulkheads on either side of and behind the bridge and in the shed-like structure behind the funnel. She also carried a hedge hog projector. She is mostly out of pine and card paper, with a carved hull from solid pine. I built up the superstructure, one layer of card paper at a time (Very labour intensive: not reccomended for those who lack patience!) She has stretched sprue masts and skywave boats, and is weathered with pastels. I am pleased with the result (except for the bent rail on her bridge which I will replace), considering she was built from three small photos of her and her sister, and I am currently working on a 1/700 USS Charles Laurence APD 37. Also in the near future are Farragut and Sims class DDs, which I hope will be improvements on my current builds. Send me an e-mail with any questions, comments, etc
