1/600 HMS Iron Duke (Airfix)
This is a model of HMS Iron Duke at Jutland. It shows her as Admiral John Jellicoe’s flagship, opening fire on the German battleship SMS Konig during the battle. This was an Airfix 1:600 scale kit, introduced in 1970. During the build I discovered many inaccuracies from the actual subject matter, which had to be corrected to depict Iron Duke as she was in 1916. These old kits are always a challenge and lots of research is essential in order to get them looking authentic!
I used White Ensign brass parts for extra detail. The ‘sea’ is ordinary household filler, the ’smoke’ is cotton wool soaked in black ink and the ‘gun flashes’ are made from battery powered Christmas lights.
