1/300 HMS Royal Sovereign 1920 (Scratchbuilt)
I scratch-built this model 25 years ago. The inspiration came from a post WWII book “Model Warships” by H. Seymour (see photos). The book is from an age when there were limited resources available on warships so the designs and plans in the book, (which originally came from Modelcraft Ltd.), are somewhat “best guess” in nature. Despite that, it captured my imagination and I chose to follow it to some extent and to create a 3 dimensional representation of a class of battleship I had always been keen on.The scale of 1/300 pre-dates the now-standard 1/350 and is based on a doubling of scale plans used in the book. I used other reference materials to try to have some degree of likeness to aspects of the original!
The hull was carved from jelutong and everything else was fabricated from bits of wood, plastic card, wire, cotton, nails, needle eyes, brass tubes, putty, etc. etc. A bit of everything was thrown in!
The camera can be cruel but I’ve always been quite proud of the model. To me it captures the look of the ship and gives a good idea of these ship’s proportions and deadly majesty.
Thanks for having a look.
