HMS Hood
by Atle Ellefsen

1/600 HMS Hood (Airfix)

I finished the model about a year ago, it was my first warship in a long time (I mostly build liners) and my first naval vessel seriously using PE. Looking at the details and the color scheme, the model is more or less anachronistic. I build for fun but I do research to a limited extent, as far as time allows. So the kit has not been built to her condition at a particular date, but overall it shouldn't be too bad. I have since had a glass vitrine made to preserve it.

My grandfather, serving in the Royal Navy as a chief engineer during the war, actually witnessed the Hood depart Scapa Flow on her fatal voyage. I was always intrigued by his story thus the Hood has had a place in my memory since childhood.

I was so inspired by building this kit that I have ordered a lot of warship kits since, stacked and waiting to be assembled. Especially Japanese and British WW2 ships interest me. I hope to be back with new models eventually - but as we know all takes time.
