HMS Tiger

1/700 HMS Tiger (Combrig)

Possibly the best looking warship ever built, the Combrig model of Tiger is one I started some time ago, but let languish on the shelf for awhile after I ran into some problems sanding parts off the wafers - especially the bridge levels, by using a power sander.

The model was built with the White Ensign photo-etch set designed specifically for this kit. I used most of the parts for the as-built version, except for the boat davits, which were made out of brass rod. I also used brass rod for the main strut in the tripod and the mast on the spotting top, and for the four coaling davits that I added. I replaced the kit resin gun barrels with brass barrels from NNT. Blast bags are made from white glue. The model was painted with Humbrol 64 for the overall color, and White Ensign colorcoats for the wood deck, superstructure decks and turrets tops. The model was weathered with "Warpigs" washes and powders.

The ship was rigged with Caenis line, with the addition of cage aerials from thin speaker wire, using the "Griffith Method" outlined in David Griffith's book. For my first attempt at this, I'm relatively happy, but hope to do a neater job next time I attempt it - there is too much glue on the horizontal lines.

Water is acrylic gel medium, painted with acrylic artist colors. Overall, I'm happy with the build - this is a well cast kit that (outside of my self-inflicted problems) fits together very well.
