Rome was a battleship, the third unit of the Littorio class and represented the best of the Italian war naval production of the Second World War. Built by the Cantieri Riuniti of the Adriatic and handed over to the Royal Navy on June 14, 1942, it was damaged by a US aerial bombardment almost a year later while at anchor in La Spezia, subsequently suffering further damage that forced it to return to operation only on the 13th August 1943.Following the Italian armistice, Rome was ordered, together with other military ships, to reach the Sardinian island of La Maddalena, as agreed with the Allies. The Italian naval squadron, however, was attacked by some German bombers that, using the radius-guided planing bombs Ruhrstahl SD 1400, sank the battleship on 9 September 1943.
In its fifteen months of service, Rome traveled 2,492 miles in twenty sea trips, without participating in naval battles, consuming 3,320 tons of fuel, remaining out of service for repairs for sixty
