Today I have finished the model of the Russian Dvenadsat Apostolov (the twelve Apostles) from the Kombrig collection in 1/700. I enjoyed the build very much although I had to scratch build some items and replace others . I replaced the complete masts with steel and used the railing and some other PE’s from the spares box. The ship is shown at anchor around 1900.
I can recommend the kit very much although I think it is not suitable for a beginner. The castings are very nicely detailed and all the parts fit together very well. The assembly plan is of the usual Combrig quality, poor and further completely in Russian. Colour suggestions etc. are missing. I had to search the internet for this, but did not find anything helpful in that direction. I did find a nice built model at SteelNavy and used the colour scheme of this one as a guideline.
This is also the first model in a 1/700 scale which I have provided with a “crew”. The painting and ] handling of these tiny figures was very fiddly but I ended up with a nice result. The anchor chains are from model train accessories which I found at an exhibition in Cologne last year.
The rigging is made of stretched sprue and the water from silicone. The hull and major parts of the superstructure were painted with an airbrush. Weathering was done with thinned own matt varnish and powder colours.
