1/700 SMS Derfflinger (Combrig )

This is my Combrig 1/700 Derfflinger shown at the time of her internment at Scapa Flow, early 1919. I seriously think that this has been the best kit that I have ever built. There are incredibly fine details and accuracy is commendable as well. Still it took me a year to finish partly because of lack of time, partly because I strive for the highest accuracy achievable. Good photographs of this battlecruiser are few and far between, so, somewhat unusually, I elected to use Mr. Thomas Klünemann’s 1/250 paper (HMV) Derfflinger as a source of information as it is really impressively detailed and very well documented replica of the real ship. As I chose to portray the ship in her final guise I had to modify some details in the bridge area and construct a tripod foremast with all its fittings from scratch which, I believe turned out remarkably well. During the construction I used a lot of photoetch sets sometimes utilizing just one or two components, yet there remained enough scope for scratchbuilding miscellaneous details. The model has been painted with WEM Colourcoats and a great deal of weathering was applied reflecting the derelict state evident from the photos of the original interned vessel. The ship will share a seascape with HMS Tiger from the same manufacturer, the construction of which I am about to commence.
