Cristobal Colon
by Rob Kernaghan

1/700 Cristobal Colon (Modelkrak Kitbash)

Partly scratchbuilt, but using the hull and funnels from a Modelkrak Nisshin and some Seals spares. PE mainly GMM and WEM. The turrets are paper as is part of the superstructure.

The hull was reworked to Spanish configuration and the Japanese superstructure cut back which meant part of the deck had to be rescribed.

She was built as a single piece, sprayed white, then the rest painted in my hand with WEM and Humbrol enamels plus Rowney oils apart from the hull.

The hull was firstly dry-brushed WEM Tyre black, then painted in Windsor and Newton Gouache, Decoart fixers then a wash of Rowney lamp black oils. This was something of an experiment.

Rigging is stretched sprue, Spanish ensign courtesy of Peter Fulgoney.

References, various drawings from a Russian source who's name I don't recall at the moment.

Total build time, about 3 weeks.

Photos thanks to Jim Baumann.
