These are photos of the completed USS Portland 1/200 scale paper model published by Fly Models. The model took approximately 1 year to complete but that time was interrupted with the start and finish of the German Light Cruiser Emden, also displayed in these pages. The Portland was a moderately difficult paper model. As I progressed I decided to improve my paper modeling skills on the Emden because I was liking the way this ship was turning out and the smaller details are more difficult to make. Also during construction I bought aluminum CNC turned barrels for the main turrets that I rebuilt. The in progress photos of the model has the original all paper barrels. The barrel set comes complete with 9 8” scaled aluminum main barrels, brass secondary barrels, and brass 40 mm AA barrels, all for less than $25. Paper models have become the primary focus of my ship building hobbies.
My current project is the GPM model SMS Lutzow WWI German High Seas Fleet battlecruiser. This is an excellent model with much improved graphics over the already very nice Portland. She will also be modeled with all aluminum and brass guns.
