At the battle of Midway Mogami was nearly sunk, and the range of damages helped to make a decision of re-building her as an hybrid cruiser/carrier to carry additional planes. Mogami last action was battle of Leyte Gulf in November 1944, when she was sunk by Adm.Halsey aviation.
