USS Boston

1/350 Protected Cruiser USS Boston (Iron Shipwright)

Protected Cruiser USS Boston, 1898
Iron Shipwright, 1/350 scale.

The USS Boston was the oldest among the squadron of cruisers and gunboats that fought in Manila Bay under the command of Commodore Dewey; a slow and weak ship to the day's standards. However she was better than any of the mixture of poorly maintained old unprotected cruisers and gunboats of the Spanish Admiral Montojo.

The model was built pretty much of the box, with the addition of extra vents from my spares box which were placed according to available photographs.

I made the sails out of ordinary office paper. I used a pencil to draw the panel lines, reef points and corner reinforcing on both sides. I then glued them to the yards, folded them to the desired shape, soaked them completely in Cyano glue and painted them in a light and quite thinned mixture of Humbrol matt cream and white.
