1/1250 USS Vincennes CG-49 (Hobby Boss)
This is my USS Vincennes, built from the 1/1250 scale Hobby Boss kit
- a nice little kit with an excellent fit and sufficiently fine detail.
But what's most, Hobby Boss did the superstructure and the stacks as one
piece castings each - no seams, no gaps, no filling, and, in particular,
no danger of loss of detail while cleaning up the corners!
Though the kit already turns into a nice representation when built out
of the box, there's always a little extra that can be done. In particular,
I:
-
removed the raised rails on the helo deck and engraved them instead
-
drilled open the little exhaust left of the aft Mk 26 starter
-
added the starboard bridge wing
-
replaced the lattice structure of the masts with paper (soaked in CA glue)
-
added safety nets cut from paper (soaked with CA glue)
-
added the QR-82 SATCOMM antenna on the hangar (but omitted the one on top
of the bridge, oh my...)
I painted the model with anything I could get hold of - unfortunately the
hull grey is rather too dark. After application, I toned down the decals
with the merest hint of the underlying greys. The rudimentary rigging was
done from stretched sprue, the flags are printed with an ink jet printer
on cigarette paper. The water base is acrylic gel on watercolour paper.
