1/487 USS Yorktown CV-5 (Revell)
Here's one I prepared before, or so the TV chefs say. This build dates
from 2003, and I very nearly gave up on it when the then 'new' and going
to be so much better Trumpeter 1/350 Yorktown class carrier was first rumored
and then revealed. Kind of glad I didn't.
I used the best of the Revell kit; the beautiful hull and the accurate
flight deck (so accurate you can measure locations by the correctly situated
expansion joints and planking detail), scratchbuilt the island and some
of the finer details, laboriously converted the SBDs back into BT-1s, built
my own Grumman biplanes and used the excellent Gold Medal Models etched
brass sheet. The Revell kit is not perfect, suffering from the blobby
small parts endemic to the era it was molded in, and has some simplifications
that have to be addressed, but we are still waiting for a worthy successor
in big scale.
