1/700 USS Yorktown CV-10, recovering planes from Marcus-raid, August 31 1943 (DML)

The Essex Class Carriers are among the most impressive ships of World War II. Having read the book “The Fighting Lady” about CV-10 USS “Yorktown” I had to build this carrier right away. I decided to build her in the outfit of the first carrier offensive action, this class was involved in: when Yorktown, Essex and Independence struck Marcus Island on August 31st 1943. The new Dragon-kit of the Essex-class was my choice for building the “Yorktown”. The kit is well done with a lot of nice details. It goes together without problems, only very few spots needed some putty. Most of the time building the kit went into additional detailing an painting the modeI. For the radar rig and a lot of small stuff I used etched parts from GMM and Eduard. The almost 300 Sailors are from Eduard’s pre painted set. For displaying my “Yorktown” I used a picture-frame, the water was made of some transparent silicone and at least some paint work to highlight the waves.
