1/350 USS Enterprise CVN65 (Tamiya)

Recently retired I received this kit as a gift from my eldest son.  Many decades had past since taking on a project of this size.  Over the space about 1 year the task was finally completed including a pine and oak base and custom built acrylic cover displayed in the first photo.

This build is the definition of OOB.  No PE parts no weathering. A bird's eye view of the deck is an exact copy of what is printed on the side of the Tamiya box.  Though the base color of the deck was airbrushed every other detail was masked and hand painted. The hull was masked and airbrushed.

Just a couple of other build notes.  The planes' colors deviate from the Tamiya paint scheme which I found too dark.  In on-line video of actual CVN65 ops the planes look much lighter. So I painted them to acheive that effect.  Also I couldn't bring myself to scraping paint off the tires and the deck in order to use model cement to stick the planes to the deck.  So, with a pin vise I made a tiny hole in the belly of each plane and a corresponding hole in the deck and CA'd a tiny metal pin to hold the planes down.

Having recently built a Trumpeter Prinz Eugen I really have to give a tip of the hat to Tamiya, for the thoroughness of their instructions and the informative documentation on the real ship's armaments and features. Btw, the Prinz Eugen is my headlong dive into PE, weathering, waterline model with a sea base, and is completed and will be my next submission.  My thanks to the inspirational work of so many contributors to the gallery and members of this site.
