This model was my first ship model ever. Based off the Iron Shipwrights Russell kit, it was built mainly for the benefit of the vets who belong to the Mustin-Hornet CV8 association. My father was on the Hornet for its entire career. I hope to take it to the next reunion in late April.
The only kit parts on the model are the stack, torpedo tubes, torpedo crane, K guns, smoke dispensers, boat davits, and the bridge. All else is after market, the masts are scratchbuilt. One possibly unique feature of this model, the ships bell is attached to the rear of the main mast just above the nav bridge level. Found it on a close up photo of Huges DD 410. On the model I used an N scale train bell. It is visible at the same level as the top of the boat davit in photo 03.
Due to delays model was not actually finished until 3/7/10, name plate is not accurate for that info.
I did not send port side photos because I used the pattern for Wainwright DD 419 by mistake. After the model was painted I located a port side photo of Mustin at Santa Cruz I would be happy to share with anyone who wants it. The port side photo shows the ship up to the number 1 gun mount at a range of about 100 yards at the closest point, so with that photo plus the one below this is probably one of the few Sims class Measure 12 modified camo schemes with photos of both sides of the ship.If you want to just post that photo also let me know I will send it to you.
Anyone who wants details on the paints, aftermarket parts, or research
I did feel free to contact me.
