USS Monssen DD-436

1/700 USS Monssen DD-436 (Dragon)

This is my model of the USS Monssen. It is the 1/700 injection moulded kit from Dragon. I must say that I am most impressed by the level of detail in these little kits. Even so, I replaced the 20mm guns, radars and maybe a few other bits and bobs with photo-etch from Gold Medal. Railings were from the same source.

I do not remember if the paints were White Ensign Colourcoats or Model Master acrylics, or even a mixture of the two. Artist’s oils were used for filters, pin-washes and dry-brushing.

Rigging was done by my usual method of Caenis line, and individual fibres teased out from nylon cord.

The signal flags J-H-S are my grandfather’s initials, James Harvey Shacklock.

The tugboat is from Battlefleet Models, and the inspiration for the setting came from a photo of the tug Hoga, pushing a four pipe destroyer away from the quayside at
