USS Radford

1/700 USS Radford DD-446 (Tamiya)

Building a 1944 USS Radford required both the Tamiya Fletcher Class destroyer kits; the earlier "Fletcher" and the later "Cushing". USS Radford, which had the earlier round bridge, underwent  a refit in December 1943 which saw her 20 mm Oerlikens forward of the bridge and down aft, replaced with twin 40 mm Bofors mounts. 40 mm mounts also appeared either side of the second stack, and the main deck 20mm Oerlikens were positioned further aft. There were numerous other changes, including 20 mm 'sky guns' above the pilot house and new radar antenna. A new mast and yards were made from brass rod, as were the funnel antenna spreaders and Ensign staff. Searchlights and signal lamps were drilled out and filled with gloss varnish to replicate the lens. I used 'US Destroyer Set #701' from Toms Modelworks and SkyWave's Set 'E6 - Equipment for US Navy Ships - WW II'. I used the pedestals off Tamiya's 20 mm guns, to provide a better 3D effect, and super glued on photo-etch shields and guns. The rigging was .002" Dai-Riki monofilament painted black. USS Radford re-entered the Pacific war in January 1944 wearing  a new Measure 32/3D camouflage scheme, which I masked and then airbrushed.
