Subject: DDG 68 RC Scratch built Date: Tue, 31 Dec 2002 18:04:14 -0800 From: "Don Macdonald" To: cadman@modelwarships.com This is an RC ship model of the DDG 68 USS THE Sullivans,( Arleigh burke Class) All or mostly Scratch built . It is set up with a 6 channle radio , The ship is about 5 1/2 feet long, beam of about 8 3/4 wide . It has working lights, all through the ship. Made of wood the hull and keel was made from 1/4 ply wood . It has a working SH 60 helo that the rotor blades turn and will also go up and down,from the flight deck in the stearn. All of the guns will turn back and forth , It has an Novack HRV speed controll , With a 6 channle recicver , Battery is a 12 volt jell cell, with dual props and rudders.dual pitmans motors, about 75 percent of the ship is scratch built including the hull then Fiber glass over the top . with a wooden deck . This ship took about 2 years to build from the time I Got my plans to the time I had it in the water . The History of the Real DDG -68, Second of name of ship that use the same name of the first one USS Sullivans . Laid down June 14 1993, commissioned at Staten Island New York April 19 1997 . Class is an Arleigh burke Guided MIssile Destroyer , Lenght 446 ft beam 66ft Propulsion 4 general Electric gas turbines with dual props and rudders, Its moto is We stick together like the first ship was , in witch was a WW 2 Flecher Destroyer . Now a floating musume in Buffow New York . THE ships were name after the 5 Sullivans that gave there live's during WW-2. The First was an Flecher class Destroyer This is an RC model of USS McClusky The ship is name for Rear Admiral Clarence Wade McClusky and aviation Hero of World war 2. As well was the Cheif of staff for the seventh fleet operations ;during that time . The real ship is an Knox perry class frigate. beam of 47 feet wide. length of 453 ft long. Keel layed Oct 21 1981 as was Commissioned on Dec 10 1982 and now still in service . propulsion two General Electric LM 2500 gas turbines. When It came into Portland For The Portland Rosefestble show or to some fleet week I was able to take a tour of it and that was when I Decided I wanted to do ship like it , The ship came into Portland about 2000 or so . The crew was kind and was willing to answer many of my questions I had , MY USS McClusky is about 6 inches wide, Lenght of about 4 and half feet long, Has one pitman motor with a single shaft and prop, Has a manunal speed controll, powered by one Jell cell battery, 2 channel radio set up , All scratch buit including the hull, has about 5 percent none scratch built parts, Took about a year to build from the time I got the plans to the compleated model .This ship is all base wood and I use 1/4 inche wood for Keel and ribs .
