Subject: HMAS Hobart Date: Tue, 11 Feb 2003 19:08:13 -0800 From: von bek To: Ship_Gallery@modelwarships.com Hi Tim and Jeff, Here are my finished photo's of HMAS Hobart, built from the White Ensign Models 1/350 Charles F. Adams (Brisbane) kit. On the base are the ship's crest (a cloth patch) and a couple of photo's from the scuttling of this vessel in November last year off the coast of South Australia (where I live). I saw David Gatt's pics of the Hobart he built from the same kit and I agree with his comments as to the accuracy of the kit. Here I would direct you to the size of the deck-house on the flag deck (that attached to the base of the fwd funnel). The Sonar Towing unit on the stern, the shape of the deck around the main missile launcher, the number of platforms on the main mast (for this version of the Hobart) and the structure surrounding the aft 5" gun. To really do the kit justice, you will need a hundred photo's to make the missing parts and improve upon those provided. Don't trust any drawings you may find of this vessel though! Those provided by the Royal Australian Navy are terribly inaccurate! If I find one thing most useful about the models of other builders is that you find details that are not in the kit which make you ask the question "What is that they are trying to represent there?" It leads you to go back to your photo's and drawings and discover things you overlooked. This is particulary useful when tackling a kit which is a conversion or adaptation of another where compromise will lead to innacuracies. I hope any prospective builders of Australia's Perth Class vessels may find something of use in my photographs! Rigging is stretched sprue, the vessel is painted overall in Tamiya IJN Grey. I used pastels - sparingly - RAN ships are almost always in immaculate finish.
