Subject: USS Yorktown sinking diorama Date: Wed, 25 Sep 2002 11:45:52 -0700 From: "Robert Swan" To: cadman@modelwarships.com Hello, Tim: I've got a favor to ask. I built a model of the USS Hughes and USS Yorktown at Midway that you were kind enough to put on your site. In the months following, I discovered some inaccuracies, so I've done it again correcting those mistakes. I've also chosen to depict the moment the Yorktown is going under rather than the ships sailing side by side like last time. Can you please remove the old pictures and include these new ones instead? I've written an intro paragraph as well: This is the USS Yorktown (CV-5) at the moment she begins to sink as the USS Hughes (DD-410, my father's ship) stands on honor guard. The Yorktown was hit by kamikazes on June 4, 1942 and struck by torpedoes on June 6. Yet she still remained afloat for one more night, finally succumbing to the sea at 06:59 on June 7. The USS Hughes stood guard of her alone the night of June 6 and was ordered to sink the Yorktown herself if it was in danger of being captured by the Japanese. The scale of the ships is 1/2400. The Hughes destroyer is literally the size of two pennies side by side. I had to paint her MS12 modified camouflage with a toothpick. You'll see oil surrounding the Yorktown and some lines from the flight deck to the water. The crewmen used these lines to lower themselves into the water when the Yorktown was abandoned. Thanks, Tim! ~Robert _________________________________________________________________ Send and receive Hotmail on your mobile device: http://mobile.msn.com -------------------------------------------------------------------- Name: Hughes.jpg Hughes.jpg Type: JPEG Image (image/pjpeg) Encoding: base64 Name: Midway02.jpg Midway02.jpg Type: JPEG Image (image/pjpeg) Encoding: base64 Name: Yorktown listing.jpg Yorktown listing.jpg Type: JPEG Image (image/pjpeg) Encoding: base64 Name: Yorktown.jpg Yorktown.jpg Type: JPEG Image (image/pjpeg) Encoding: base64 Name: Sunrise.jpg Sunrise.jpg Type: JPEG Image (image/pjpeg) Encoding: base64 Name: Sunrise2.jpg Sunrise2.jpg Type: JPEG Image (image/pjpeg) Encoding: base64
