The Sands of Iwo Jima
by Ron Dickenson

This Diorama features a couple of LST's by the Naval Base in 1/245 scale. The bows are scratch built and stretched sprue was added for rigging. The vehicles are GHQ 1/285 wargaming miniatures and the 319 figures are from Gold Medal Models 1/350 Photo Etch set. You will need a magnifying glass to see all the little details that have been added.  The diorama depicts the invasion of island of Iwo Jima 19 February, 1945.
Yes the sand was really that dark and the sea that blue. The beaches, the land between them, and a good part of the terrain are deeply covered by brown volcanic ash and black cinders which look like sand, but are so much lighter than sand that walking is difficult, and running impossible. This model is one of Ron's many displays featured at the St. Joseph Museum.
