Feel free making necessary corrections. BTW - I'm sending the last, forgotten photo. Regards Dariusz THE STORY : First of all - this is an imaginary tale, however all participants are (or were...) real. If You have a collection of stunning warships, big table, a camera (no advanced tricks required, believe me) and... head full of crazy ideas - You may write another alternative chapter of WWI history. But this one is mine. And now imagine - Imperial Germany Navy (Hochseeflotte) harbor, it's February 1916 and You're watching final preparations of the very powerful task force. war97 - Starboard view of the flagship, battlecruiser SMS Derfflinger. It's a very cold morning, but the crew should wake up, because... war109 - The admiral is coming now. Attention ! war100 - Midship view, shortly before coal loading. And now let me introduce the most important participants : war53, war36, war38 & war41 - SMS Derfflinger (during final trials). war118 - Grosse torpedoboot (destroyer) V 69, the flagship of destroyer's flotilla. war119 - V 164, another destroyer. war120 - Two smaller and older destroyers - V 155 (closer to the camera) and G 137. war117 - The only "mobilized civilian here - small icebreaker, very important ship in any winter operation. That's why all started. Enemy's installed powerful and dangerous coastal artillery. Destroyers learned about it couple days ago and it was a very hard lesson. war132 - Ouch, deadly close ! Heavy shell, really. war136 - Badly damaged destroyer luckily was kept afloat and finally found her way home. So, the plan is very simple - to eliminate the above said coastal artillery. war65 & war64 - War seems to be so far from here, but it's only illusion. war106 - Commanders conference, icebreaker ready to go. Spot the famous German plane - fighter Albatross approx. 50 meters above Derfflinger's deck. war107, war103, war101 - Leaving home to fight for Kaiser and fatherland. war2, war1 - The weather is good today, quite sunny but cold. Thanks God there're no ice float at all. Gardenga may go back. war80, war79, war81 - Leaving the lighthouse behind on the way to open sea. war113, war112 - Nice shots taken from invisible companion - huge Zeppelin. war45 - Reaching the battlefield, guns prepared, torpedoes loaded. Who knows what may happen in a fraction of the second. war43 - Speed 20 knots, port side view of SMS Derfflinger and her escort. war48 - Yet another Zeppelin view - battlecruiser is still out of coastal artillery range, but not out of her own... war51 - Open fire ! The battle begins. war37, war5 - Coastal artillery is knocked down, Derfflinger is looking for another opponent. war110 - And one more Zeppelin photo. Almost maximum speed. war49 - We noticed the enemy here - perhaps one battlecruiser, one armored cruiser and four destroyers. war123 - Open fire ! war55 - Two destroyers have been badly damaged - V 69 just fired mercy torpedo. V 164 wants to score also. war88 - Unsuccessful torpedo attack against battlecruiser. But no doubt - V 164 is very lucky ship this time - no direct hit. war126 - Unidentified (oh, really ?) battlecruiser on the run, Derfflinger quits the hunt. war71 - But this old armored cruiser is too slow to survive. Now abandoned and burning near a small island. V 164 checks out if mercy torpedo is necessary. war82 - V 69 on her way home. Find Albatross if You can recognize this plane... war83 - Well done boys, You may go home. war140 - David and Goliath - V 155 and Derfflinger. war63 - Admirals order - turn on searchlight. war62 - Impressive night photo - V 69 and the flagship. war127, war60, war61, war138 - More night photos. war92 - Another cold morning. war90 - New action begins - to be continued... -------------------------------------------------------------------- Name: war55.JPG war55.JPG Type: JPEG Image (image/jpeg) Encoding: base64
