Tirpitz in Faettenfjord 1942
by Rainer Michalek

1/350 Tirpitz in Faettenfjord 1942 (Revell Germany)
.

Before I was able to build my 1/350 interpretation of this project, I had to wait for a kit of this ship that was to my liking, the Tamiya version involving too much work.

Fortunately we are in an era of excellent new models being released, and following up the success of the Bismarck in 1/350 Revell followed it up with a 1/350 model of the sistership Tirpitz. I eagerly snapped up a test-shot Tirpitz kit and commenced my project.

It’s a great kit with attention to detail, and I commenced construction of the model using in the main the Eduard PE set; which despite being designed to fit the Tamiya kit works well with only a few modifications needed for the for the Revell model.

I planned to depict the Tirpitz during 1942 at her lair in Faettenfjord Norway. I bought from the Troms Museum the book “Hitlers Siste Slagskip” by John Asmussen and Kjetil Akra .

A superb resource for the model maker, containing within its pages a lot of detail photos of the camouflage structures as well as the surroundings. I have not as yet seen another model of Tirpitz depicted within this timeframe with this camouflage.

The timber diorama base measures 1009mm x 600mm ( 39.75 in x 23.62 in )

The cliffs were made of Styrofoam shapes overlaid with mesh and model-makers plaster.

The water was made as per my usual method described here.

The detailed construction of the model was featured in well known German magazine ‘MODELLFAN’

I hope you like my latest model!!
