Still Waters

1/700 Still Waters (Hobby Boss)

Hobby Boss makes some great sub kits. I decided to mount two inside a shadow box I bought at Hobby Lobby. I had the lid made custom from plexiglass. The original plan was to put a Pegasus class Hydrofoil speeding across the top, or maybe even a DD. But the more I looked at it, the more I felt that a smaller boat (the smallest possible) would emphasize the subs more. I asked a few fellow modelers and an artist friend and they all agreed. It was tough though, giving up that much space to a tiny boat. The boat itself is a highly modified IJN cutter, with a scratch-built cabin.

I deliberately left any detail off of the subs and refrained from painting or decals. I also modeled them with all antennae/scopes retracted, to emphasize their monolithic appearance, and also to make them as difficult to see as possible: black on black, kind of thing. I mostly do armored warships and WWII subjects, but couldn't resist having fun with these Hobby Boss kits. The photos are by my friend J. Christopher Little.
