R.M. Admiral Magnaghi Hydrographic survey ship
by Giuseppe Giraldi
ADMIRAL
1/65 Admiral Magnaghi Hydrographic survey ship (Scratchbuilt)

The MAGNAGHI was designed and used for  hydro-graphic survey work  of the seabed  by the Italian Navy. She operated mainly in the Sicilian Channel and also the Red Sea; making detailed  charts  with the information gained essential for safe navigation.

Launched on 10/08/1914 by Cantieri ODERO - Genoa
Sunk in 1945
Length     83.2 meters
Beam       11.4 meters
Armament: 4 x 76 mm cannons.

I built the model of the ship MAGNAGHI in 1:65 scale because this scale has allowed me to create all the parts in great detail, entirely from scratch. The model was constructed  using the  drawings and  original plans of the Ship obtained from the builders yard . (a total of 50 plan sheets!!). The documentation for the depth sounding equipment of the various types I obtained from the institute Idrogratico Navy Italiana, Oceanograiico and the Museum of Monaco. I also extensively researched the locally used methods of shipbuilding of that era.

The hull is made entirely of metal (brass). All the decks and superstructures  are  made of metal. In this model there is absolutely no plastic and no  Photoetchings as  I am by inclination a traditional modeller and revel in the work!
