1/400 HMCS Snowberry Flower Class Corvette (L'Arsenal) |
This is the L'Arsenal 1/400 Flower Class Corvette kit 400-03. The kit
represents a mid to late war long forecastle type. No two Flowers were
identical and the same ship could undergo enough refits that over the course of the war she didn't look the same at any given time. I chose to model this kit as the HMCS Snowberry in 1943 in the Western Approaches scheme (which according to my wife is cute). This almost an OOB build, I replaced the mast and yard with phosphor bronze wire soldered together with the resin crow's nest glued on. The rigging bracket on the forward side of the aft gun tub is brass wire instead of the supplied PE part. Several deckboxes were cut off since photos of Snowberry did not show them. I modified the depth charge racks to shorten them and cut openings in the stern as Snowberry had through the rail rather than the kit's over the rail stern racks. The hull numbers are some old Letraset dry transfers and the Donald Duck holding a bomb on the gunshield is a .gif I found on the net and scaled down to print on my ALPS. Colors are Model Master Acryl Antifouling Red and flat white on the hull and Dunkelgrau 02 on the steel decks, the wood deck is various colors of Vallejo, the WA blue and green are old Model Shipways paint that I got from a closeout sale (they are Clipper Pearl Blue and Clipper Pearl Green.....they look right). A wash of titanium white, mars black and payne's grey oil was used to pop the detail and Rustall solution was used for the rust streaks common to the corvettes. I used a Canadian flag from the GMM flag decals set. Photos were shot with an Olympus C-2100UZ, outdoors in late afternoon.
