USS Burton Island

USS Burton Island was originally classified as miscellaneous auxiliary ship with hull number AG-88 . Later she was reclassified to be ice breaker with hull number agb-1. She was laid down on march 15 th.,1946 and launched on April 30, 1946 by Western Pipe and Steel co. , San Pedro, California , u.s.a. and was decommissioned from u.s. navy on march 01 st.,1949 . after several years of inactive , in December 1966 she was transfer to Coast Guard USCG Burton island . She was modernized and had been in service with USCG. for 12 years . She was deployed with great success on peaceful expeditions and missions into arctic and Antarctic . Finally , on may 09 th.,1978 she was decommissioned by USCG. and was in situation of disposal. USS Burton Island has displacement of 3,575 tons ( normal ) 6,500 tons (full load) with overall length 269 ‘ beam 63’ 9” . She was powered by diesel electric tandem that’s driven by two 5,000 hp. Dc. Low speed motors. Her power source is consisted of six 10 cylinders Fairbank-Morris diesel engines generators . She can reach the speed of 16 knot. To prevent becoming icebound , her high speed pumps pumped large amount of water from one side to the other side which kept the vessel in constant motion. this model of mine is the original USS Burton Island with number 88 marking on her bow , model’s built from Revell A.G. of Germany , now becomes one of rare kits.
