1/700 MCM 14 USS Chief (Scratchbuild)
I happened to be in Sturgeon Bay, WI, in Sept. 1993 when MCM 14 USS
Chief was being finished at the famed Petersen Shipbuilding Co. MCM Chief
was the last minesweeper and last naval vessel built at Petersen. Attached
is a bow-on photo I shot of the Chief from the Palmer-Johnson Yacht Co.
docks. The site of Petersen yards is now a marina and up-scale condominiums.
I couldn't resist attempting to make a small scratch-build of this Avenger
Class mine countermeasures ship to join my miniature fleet, using a balsa
plug, model railroad building sheet plastic, and bits and pieces. An astounding
number of submarines, landing craft, minesweepers, and utility vessels
were built in Wisconsin yards over the decades.
