Enterprises Under Sail: A Sloop and a Yatch
by Philip LaVoie

1/350 USS Enterprise sloop and Enterprise yatch (Scratchbuilt)

Here are a couple of quick pics of a little project I did of a couple of famous Enterprise-named vessels to sail alongside the CVN-65 carrier. It's amazing how small these ships look in comparison. There have been several sailing vessels named Enterprise over the years, and these are two of the more well-known. The USS Enterprise schooner was a 14-gun warship built in 1799 that had a successful history of capturing privateers. It was about 85 feet long with a crew of around 70. The second ship is the J class yacht Enterprise from 1930 that was 80 feet long. The hulls of both ships were carved from balsa wood and used a variety of material from wood, wire, plastic and tinfoil sails to complete in only about 4 days.
