Please find attached herewith a mini photo survey of the bigger ships. cumberland-96-jb County 1st Class Armored Cruisers The HMS Cumberland model is the only model NOT built by me; I saw her at the International Model Show at Olympia in London back in 1994 and at the time thought she was state of the art; subsequently when when offered for sale in Modelboats magazine I had to buy her, travelling a considerable distance and parting wiith a considerable amount of money....She is fully RC but has never been afloat in my ownership having been placed inside her large case immediately. With the benefit of the retroscope I know that while it is good it is alas not state of the art.... BUT nevertheless is a very attractive display model and makes a nice backdrop to the dining room It is built to a scale (IIRC) of 1/96 and was scratchbuilt by Mr Jackson of Bristol UK. The original ship was launched in 1902 as a first class armoured cruiser for the Royal Navy. puritan- PURITAN was a gaff rigged Americas Cup defender, a centreboarder known colloquially as a 'skimming dish', this line of development culminated in the formation of a more" sensible" class of Americas Cup yachts; namely the legendary J-class( of which there are still 3 British Yachts in original rig format in existence) The model was built by me as a plank-on -frame model from a Malmoli wooden kit in 1993, the word 'Kit 'being a slight misnomer(!); a collection of raw-materials with drawings would be a closer description!; a huge amount of scratchbuilding in timber being required!Being a sailmaker by profession was a helpful attribute ....! The boltropes were all handsewn around the sail perimeters, the eyelets were hollow tubular rivets from the ModelRailway world closed with a springloaded centre punch. The Gaff rigged Fishing Yawl was built using the Billings Boats FD 10 Yawl kit as a starting point; the same comments about 'Kit' apply as with Puritan but only more so! We all have no idea how cushy we have it with resin/plastic kits and PE....!! Hornets bow in timber would be down to each builders individual interpretation and patience with sandpaper.....!! RMS LUSITANIA was built from a 1/350 Entex kit, this was my very first ever excursion into Photoetch(GMM) obtained from White Ensign Models back in 1992....I thought I would choose an easy subject to start with for Photoetch......... I recall thinking how INCREDIBLY fine the etch was.... this was the 'old' GMM style, compared to todays offerings it appears a little dense..... there are a few additional pictures oof the house annd its modelshipcontents.Panay next to the hall light looks rather romantic(with Olympia behind...) I have also included a photograph of my latest Birthday present from Katrin, a rather fine watercolour of HMS Dreadnought entering Portsmouth harbour.... As a final touch please find also a photo of some VERY early models of mine, the ship in'bottle '(pill jar) is a ROSETHORN with pins and papersails and was made when I was 8 years old. The paddle excursion steamer in a matchbox I made when I was 10 years old, so it was sorrt of inevitable that I would become a model obsessive.....
