Pinta

1/60 Pinta (Amati)

This is a reproduction of one of the three caravels of Columbus. The ship was build starting from the very good kit of the Italian manufacturer Amati. The construction of the hull is a typical plank on frame method. The wood quality of the planks, the frames and the keel is very good. Once the hull was completed I began to add the fittings provided with the kit and despite their quality I discover one of the typical problems of the period wooden ship models: the correct scale. A very useful reference for a correct reproduction of all the details was this book Historic Ship Models by Wolfram Zu Mondfeld.

I also added a lot of scratch built detail especially as far as the armament and the auxiliary fittings. For this purpose I can suggest as a very good reference Ship Modeling from Stem to Stern by Milton Roth and Lusci's Ship Model Builder's Handbook by Vincenzo Lusci.
