This is a 1/72 model of U-625 that was sunk on March 10, 1944 off the coast of Ireland by Sunderland flying boat EK591 of 422 Squadron RCAF. My father, Frank Cauley, was the navigator aboard the Sunderland. I started this project in December 2005 as a present for my father, and presented the finished version to him on Christmas Day 2006.
The boat is based on the Revell VIIC U-boat. I consider this a major conversion project, since I had to turn the stock kit into a Turm Wintergarten variety that U-625 was. Numerous conversion and detail sets/parts were used, including the excellent Nautilus Models Turm II Wintergarten Conversion Set.
Fit and finish of the Revell kit was excellent, and was really enhanced by all of the detail parts.
