This is one of Revell's Typhoon models. It includes a strange feature that Revell calls a bow mounted sonar blister. Revell released this model at least three times, starting with this one in the late 80's. Then they deleted the sonar blister, added a towed sonar array, and sold it as the Red October following the movie. A few years later the Red October version was sold again in a Revell Germany box as a regular Typhoon, it still includes the towed sonar array intended for Red October.
I painted this model with acrylic craft paints. I also used cardboard to alter the shape of the stern so it would resemble the real Typhoon. The stern area looks terrible if built according to the directions. The sonar blister is interesting, but dose not make sense to me. I decided to use this model to build my own version of the Red October. The sonar blister is now a component in its silent propulsion system. The towed sonar array was conveniently provided by a Revell Germany kit built previously. Also included in this model display are some 1/350 scale aircraft by Trumpeter.
