1/350 USS Chicago SSN-721 (Riich Models)
My Last Day At SeaThis diorama depicts my last day at sea before retiring. I was the on the bridge as we were returning to San Diego on May 10th 1997. A pair of gray whales were directly in front of us on our track. I soon realized I was the only one on the bridge that realized they were there. I brought it to the attention of the Officer of the Deck so that we could avoid them. It surprised me that they seemed oblivious to our approach. I wonder to this day if whales hearing id directional similar to how our sonar system work on subs.
Modeling specifics, scratch built gray whales, flying bridge and flag, figures are from North Star Models. Sea is carved styrofoam painted with acrylics, coated with Mod Podge, To get the bow rise took 6 weeks of patiently painting layer after layer over the bow. Whitewater is cotton highlighted with flat white paint. Chicago emblem is off my old name tag.
