USS Olympia

1/232 USS Olympia (Revell)

I build this model many years ago and decided to go back and see what detail I could add to it. I used to live not far from Philadelphia where the actual ship is berthed as a musium. There are a few paint schemes the ship went thorugh in it's career. I chose to repaint my original grey body to the musium's color scheme of white and gold/beige.

The model is molded with railing posts. I added rope rungs and white 'canvas' railing covers. many of the railing posts had broken off over time and had to be replaced. I used plastic broom bristles cut to size. I had made the stern American flag and post. Added detail to the gangway stairs along side the ship. Added rudders to the life boats and launch. With the luanch I added detail including a wheel, propeller, and seats. I cut out the ship's funnels out then added mesh covers using window screening.

Using historical reference pictures I added rigging and flags. Painted the ship's hull with a 'weathered' look and drilled out the portholes.
